The meeting on National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS) in Benin brought together key stakeholders to discuss the implementation of the NFCS. A strategic and action plan for the NFCS is under development and will be validated through a national workshop in the second quarter of 2018. Participants also visited the village of Gangban, which is frequently affected by floods. Drawing from exchanges with the villagers, who are often displaced by floods, and the conclusions of the workshop, the following points were highlighted:

  • the willingness for getting a training of local communicators for the dissemination of meteorological and climatological information
  • the approval of an early warning system through the management the National Agency for Civil Protection (ANPC) that they are currently using and that is operationally relevant
  • the availability to collaborate with the National Agency of Meteorology, through the acceptance of meteorological equipment (rain gauges) to be installed in their site, and their provision of data to the National Met Agency
  • the commitment to train a National Met Agency resource person on local/traditional knowledge on climate prediction/weather forecasting and to work jointly with the National Met Agency to promote this kind of knowledge
