Contributed project tabsOverviewIn a constantly changing world, the demand for weather, climate and water data is on the rise. The number of internet users of Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service's website (www.meteo.lt) is increasing at unprecedented pace, indicating a clear need for more comprehensive and innovative e-services. To fill this gap, LHMS in collaboration with Vilnius University is implementing the METIS project. The project aims at increasing the technical capabilities of LHMS to provide new weather and climate services. The project will develop a new climate data management system, new workstations and a new user interface platform. The user platform will provide climate data and information to end users in timely and user-friendly manner. After the implementation of METIS project, new e-services will be delivered for 9 specific user communities: road maintenance and transportation, aviation, electricity and heat supply, construction engineering and planning, marine transportation and services, railway maintenance and rail transportation, agriculture, leisure and sport activities, research and education. Pillar: Climate Services Information SystemUser Interface PlatformBenefits: Increased availability of weather, water and climate data by reduced number of procedural steps and easy on-line access; Advanced climate and weather products for society and decision-makers; Enhanced capacities of LHMS to deliver weather and climate related products in timely and user-friendly manner; Delivery of customized weather information for the specialized users. Activities: Install new climate data management system and migrate data from old data bases; Install new workstations tailored to the daily forecasters' needs; Create service packages for specialised users: road maintenance, aviation, heat and energy producers, engineering and building companies, marine transport, railways, agriculture and leisure activities; Provide trainings for system administrators and users; Present project results and advertise the new user platform. Objectives: 1. To improve services provided by LHMS to satisfy the needs of end users. 2. To provide on-line access to weather, water and climate data in systematic, qualitative and user-friendly manner. 3. To develop user information platform. Deliverables/Outcomes: 16 new services and products on-line; New climate data management system for LHMS; New workstations for weather forecasting operations; New user platform for e-service delivery. Inputs: Existing LHMS infrastructure and expertise will be used to create new user platform and new e-products; Vilnius University will provide their expertise in creation of user-friendly interface and innovative design of the information system. Risks: Overload of existing network connections due to the high data demand; Increase of financial constrains to sustain the new user platform; Inadequate human resources to provide and maintain new sophisticated e-services. Resource requirements: Project is funded from the European Regional Development Fund (2007–2013) and the state budget of the Republic of Lithuania. Project is based on the existing infrastructure of Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Environment. Indicators and assessment measures: Number of registered users in METIS user platform; Number of new services and products available; Number of daily users of public weather, climate and water services. About the Project Goal: The main aim of the project is to increase the access and use of the services provided by the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service (LHMS). It aims to provide on-line weather and climate services and to enable end users from Lithuania ant other EU countries to subscribe and receive customized products according to their needs. Ultimately, thanks to METIS, hydrometeorological data and services will be easy accessible for all government and public institutions, private companies and general public.
