The Ministry of Health of Dominica in collaboration with the Department of Meteorological Services of Dominica and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have organized a National Consultation to: discuss the benefits of the GFCS in various sectors; identify needs for climate information in decision making; and mainstream climate change adaptation in the four initial priority sectors of the GFCS (health, agriculture and food security, water and disaster risk reduction). The consultation took place in Roseau on 12-13 August and brought together key stakeholders from the National Meteorological Service and key decision makers from various sectors, who, based on the gaps and needs identified, will discuss how Dominica could implement the requirements of the framework and develop a plan for implementation.

Objectives

The objectives of national consultation are:

To review the current status of generating climate information and assess the specific needs of the various sectors to facilitate and improve projections, predictions and decision making;

To identify the various areas for improvement in interactions between the climate services and the various sectors;
To articulate the capacity building needs for Dominica in terms of mandates, infrastructure as well as human resources, in all the components of the GFCS;
To identify, propose and prioritize, ways to promote community understanding and awareness of climate variability and change, and associated health risks, and opportunities for improved climate risk management in the health sector;
To discuss and recommend improved arrangements for enhanced research and analysis of national and local climate issues and their health impact
